IRC short for Internet Relay Chat it's a protocol used on the Internet that provides you a way of interact in real time with people from anywhere in the world, basically it consists in a network such as WorldUsers.net, which one has several servers all connected each other. In order for you to use this kind of service you need to have a "IRClient", which is a program that works with the IRC protocol, that allows you to connect to a network and trade information with it. On contrary to other protocols which you need to use their own and one available Client (recently this becomes to be not so true), for IRC there are several different Clients you can choose for almost any available platform and/or Operating System.
